How to Convert a PDF to a Word Document: What Works and What Does Not

The Short Answer

For a PDF that is mostly text, the quickest route is a browser tool such as PDF to Word: upload the PDF, and download a Word file containing its text. It does not keep complex layouts, images or tables, so for a design-heavy document, Word's own PDF import usually gives a closer result.

Four Ways to Convert a PDF to Word

  1. A browser converter (fast, text only). PDF to Word extracts the text from every page into an editable .docx file. Best for letters, reports and contracts where you mainly need the words. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Open the PDF in Microsoft Word. In Word, choose File, then Open, and pick the PDF. Word converts it and tries to keep more of the layout. This is often the best option if you have Word.
  3. Google Docs. Upload the PDF to Google Drive, right-click it and open it with Google Docs. It works well for text PDFs, though formatting can shift.
  4. Copy and paste. For a page or two, select the text in the PDF and paste it into Word. Quick, but tedious for long files.

What a Text-Based Converter Will Not Do

Being upfront about this saves you time:

  • Images are not carried over. You will need to re-insert pictures.
  • Tables are not rebuilt. Table text comes through as plain text, not a formatted table.
  • Layout is simplified. Columns, text boxes and exact positioning are not reproduced.

If you need the original look, use Word's PDF import, or recreate the layout once the text is in Word.

What About Scanned PDFs?

A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, so there is no text to extract. Run OCR PDF first, which turns the image into selectable text. Then convert the result to Word.

How to Convert a PDF to Word Step by Step

  1. Open PDF to Word.
  2. Select your PDF.
  3. Click convert and download the .docx file.
  4. Open it in Word, fix the formatting you need, and save.

Keeping Your Documents Private

Many online converters upload your file to their servers. PDF Section converts in your browser instead, so contracts, reports and personal documents stay on your device.

Quick Answers

  • Is it free? Yes, with no sign-up.
  • Can I convert a password-protected PDF? Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then convert.
  • Will fonts match? Not always. The text is extracted, so Word uses its own fonts unless the document specifies them.
