How to Remove Blank Pages from a PDF (Free and Private)

The Short Answer

Open Remove Pages, upload your PDF, click each blank page in the thumbnail view, and download the new file. It takes under a minute and works on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android. Your file stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Why PDFs End Up With Blank Pages

  • Double-sided scanning. A scanner scans both sides of each sheet, including the empty backs.
  • Word page breaks. A manual page break, or text that just spills onto a new page, leaves an empty page at the end of a section.
  • Merged files. Combining PDFs can leave blank separator pages, especially from documents that were printed double-sided.

How to Remove Blank Pages, Step by Step

  1. Open Remove Pages.
  2. Select your PDF. Every page appears as a thumbnail.
  3. Click each blank page to select it. Selected pages are marked for removal.
  4. Click the remove button and download your new PDF.
  5. Open the result and check the page count to make sure nothing else disappeared.

The tool does not detect blank pages for you. You pick them, which means a page with a faint scan mark or a header will not be removed by mistake.

Tips for Long Documents

  • Look for faint marks. A page that looks empty may have a tiny header, page number or scanner noise. That is fine to remove if you do not need it.
  • Remove them all in one go. Select every blank page first and export once. It is faster than repeating the steps.
  • Keep only a few pages instead? If most of the document is unwanted, use Extract Pages to keep just the pages you choose.

Stop Blank Pages at the Source

If the blank pages come from Word, fix it before exporting to PDF. Turn on the paragraph marks, find the stray page break or empty paragraph at the end of the section, and delete it. For scanners, turn on the "skip blank pages" option if your scanner offers it.

Quick Answers

  • Can I do this on a Mac without extra software? Yes. In Preview, show the thumbnails, select a page and press Delete. A browser tool is quicker when you need to remove many pages.
  • Does removing pages reduce quality? No. The remaining pages are kept as they are.
  • Is there a page limit? Processing happens on your device, so the practical limit is your device's memory.
