How to Split a PDF Into Separate Pages or Sections (Free)

The Short Answer

Open Split PDF, upload your file and choose how to split it: every page as its own PDF, custom page ranges such as 1-3, 5, 7-10, or equal groups of pages. Download the result. Everything runs in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.

Three Ways to Split a PDF

  1. All pages. Every page becomes its own PDF. Useful for pulling individual pages out of a scanned batch. Multiple pages are delivered as a ZIP file.
  2. Page ranges. Type the pages you want, for example 1-3, 5, 7-10. Only those ranges are exported. Good for sending one chapter or one section.
  3. Every N pages. Split the document into groups of equal size, such as every 5 pages. Handy for long reports or multi-document scans.

How to Split a PDF Step by Step

  1. Open Split PDF.
  2. Select your PDF.
  3. Pick a split mode: all pages, ranges, or every N pages.
  4. If you chose ranges or groups, enter them.
  5. Click split and download your files.

Split vs Extract vs Remove

These sound alike but do different jobs:

  • [Split PDF](/split-pdf) breaks a file into several new files.
  • [Extract Pages](/extract-pages) keeps the pages you pick in a new file.
  • [Remove Pages](/remove-pages) deletes the pages you pick and keeps the rest.

If you only want to drop a few pages, removing is quicker than splitting.

Common Uses

  • Send only the relevant chapter of a long document.
  • Separate a scanned batch into individual documents.
  • Break a large file into smaller parts that fit under an email size limit. You can also compress the PDF.
  • Split a combined file back into its original documents. To join them again later, use Merge PDF.

Quick Answers

  • Does splitting reduce quality? No. Pages are copied as they are.
  • Is it free? Yes, with no sign-up.
  • Is the file uploaded? No. Processing happens on your device.
